Theoretical background

The adult educator-coach competence Understanding importance of women employment in digital sector is the ability to act towards empowering women to join the digital sector of the labour market.

The competence is based on the knowledge of existing gender-based vertical and horizontal segregation in the labour market as one of the most pervasive and persistent aspects of contemporary global economy showing an unequal distribution of women and men in the workforce. Segregation also impacts the gender pay gap, which stands at 16% in the EU in accordance with EIGE Gender Statistics Database. Awareness about the factors influencing gender pay gap is also very important for understanding the ways to reduce gender pay gap in the labour market.

Awareness of the growing gap between men and women's participation in the digital sector in education, career and entrepreneurship includes understanding that the share of women working in the digital market has to be increased, as nowadays the share of men working in the digital sector is 31 times greater than the share of women.

Knowledge of European Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025 includes understanding the importance to empower women to tackle gender discrimination in the labour market, especially in the digital sector.
